Annealing is a heat treatment that alters the physical and sometimes chemical properties of a material to increase its ductility and reduce its hardness, making it more workable. It involves heating a material above its recrystallization temperature, maintaining a suitable temperature for an appropriate amount of time and then cooling. Typically, in steels, annealing is used to reduce hardness, increase ductility and help eliminate internal stresses.During normalising, the material is heated to a temperature approximately equivalent to the hardening temperature (800-920°C). At this temperature new austenitic grains are formed. The austenitic grains are much smaller than the previous ferritic grains. After heating and a short soaking time the components are cooled freely in air (gas). During cooling, new ferritic grains are formed with a further refined grain size. In some cases, both heating and cooling take place under protective gas to avoid oxidation and decarburisation. What is the Process of Annealing and How does an Annealing Furnace Work?

An annealing furnace heats the material above its recrystallization temperature and then cooling the material once it has been held at the desired temperature for a desired amount of time. The material recrystallizes as it cools because the heating process causes the atoms movement to redistribute and eradicate dislocations in the work piece or the material.
Annealing Process works in three stages – the recovery stage, recrystallization stage and the grain growth stage. The three stages of annealing process are as follows:
1. Recovery Stage
This stage is where the furnace or other heating device is used to raise the temperature of the material to such a point that the internal stresses are relieved.
2. Recrystallization Stage
Heating the material above its recrystallization temperature but below its melting point causes new grains to form without any residual stresses.
3. Grain Growth Stage
Cooling the material at a specific rate causes new grains to develop. After which the material will be more workable. Subsequent operations to alter mechanical properties can be carried out following annealing.

Stress Relief Annealing Process
Heat the steel to a certain temperature below Ac1 (generally 500 ~ 650 ℃), insulation, and then cooling with the furnace. The stress annealing temperature is lower than A1, so the stress annealing does not cause organizational change. The objective of the Stress Relief Annealing Process is to Eliminate residual internal stress of the work piece.
The Ferritic steel grades retaining single-phase structures throughout the operating temperature range require nothing more than short recrystallization annealing at temperatures of 760 to 955°C
